Forrest A. Glass
HOPEWELL—Forrest Allen Glass, 93, died Sept. 3, 2008.
Born in Richmond, Virginia on Feb. 9, 1915, Mr. Glass lived most of his life in Hopewell.
He received his bachelor’s degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Wake Forest University, where he played football, basketball, and baseball and was honored to be a member of several academic societies, including the Order of the Golden Bough.
He also graduated from the United States Naval Academy Officers Training School and received his Master’s degree from the College of William and Mary.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II as a Lt. Commander on the merchant ship “Cornelia” and on the ammunition ship “Firedrake”.
Following the war, he married his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Haley Glass, and devoted himself to coaching and teaching in the Hopewell City school system.
This revered gentleman was respected as an athlete, educator, scholar, mentor, and coach.
The City of Hopewell named the baseball field at Hopewell High School the “Forrest Glass Field” in his honor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fletcher Allen Glass and Lula Vivian Cosby Glass; brothers, Milton A. Glass and Roy M. Glass; and daughter, Anne Cary Glass Massa.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Mary Nelson Glass Thompson and husband Dr. Harvey K. Thompson, Elizabeth Glass Smith and husband William R. Smith, and Linda Glass Hyslop and husband, Dr. John W. Hyslop; son-in-law, Dr. Robert J. Massa; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, 8300 Richmond Road, Toano, Va., 23168, or to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 505 Cedar Lane, Hopewell, Va., 23860.
The family deeply appreciates the care and compassion given to Mr. Glass by the staff at Cedarfield, Richmond, where he resided.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hopewell, followed by a graveside service at 4 p.m. at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church in Toano.
