FRANKLIN—A Newsoms man was arrested, and police confiscated drugs and cash, following an early-morning traffic stop in Franklin on Wednesday.

Nicholas M. Sykes, 24, of Statesville Road, was a passenger in a car that Franklin police officers stopped at a gas station on Armory Drive after learning that there was an outstanding warrant for the driver, according to Lt. T.W. Whitt, a spokesman for the department.

When officers noticed that the passenger appeared to be nervous, they searched the car and found $2,000 worth of a substance they believed to be crack cocaine, along with a &uot;substantial amount of cash,&uot; in the center console, Whitt said in a press release.

After further investigation, they arrested Sykes and charged him with possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute. He was taken to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail on a $5,000 secured bond.

Whitt said police also served the outstanding traffic warrant on the driver of the car, Donte Malone.
