WILLIAMSBURG-Franklin’s Matt Hopkins fell short here Wednesday in his bid to advance beyond stroke play in the Virginia State Golf Association’s 95th State Amateur.

Hopkins, a former Franklin High and Christopher Newport University standout, shot a 4-over-par 75 for the second consecutive day on the River Course at Kingsmill and missed the cut by six strokes. The top 32 players advanced to match play beginning today.

Anthony Stephenson of Smithfield shot a 74 Wednesday and a 77 Tuesday, missing the cut by seven strokes.
