NORFOLK—Gary Dean Ballard Jr., died peacefully June 21, 2008 of pulmonary disease, surrounded by his family.

He was born Oct. 21, 1966, in Portsmouth.

Mr. Ballard lived a full life and was known for his humor, kindness and love of animals. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his mother, Joanne Griffin of Smithfield; his maternal grandmother, Lucille Griffin of Portsmouth; his father, Gary Ballard of Suffolk; his paternal grandparents, James and Maxine Ballard of Gates, N.C.; and his longtime devoted canine companion, Lady.

Arrangements are being handled by Loving Funeral Home Churchland.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Chapel.
