SURRY—Mother Essie B. Young, daughter of the late Anna Lane White and Johnny White, was born Dec. 26, 1909, and died June 21, 2008, at Sentara Obici Memorial Hospital in Suffolk.
She was a member of True Apostolic Holiness Church, where she was the Mother of the Church.
Mrs. Young faithfully served in the church, where she was the organizer of the ‘Self-Denial Funds.’ She was a member of the Missionary Board and the usher board.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Young, and her children, George Arthur, Herbert Lee, Saint Paul, Randolph, Elsie, Dorothy, Elnora and Ernest.
Survivors include her children, Frank C. Young (Ellen Rea) of Surry, Herman Clyde Young of Hampton, Henry Owen Young (Roxie) of Smithfield, John Curtis Young (Ethelene) of Surry, Christine Artis Battle of Hampton, Frances Bell Young McCullough of Ft. Washington, Md., Darlene Wyche (Ben) of Clinton, Md., Gladoria Warren (Wesley) of Surry, Ruby Lee Cooper (John) of Ft. Washington, Md. and Vickie Croaker of Ivor; four sisters-in-law, Julia White, Edith Brown, Ludelia Bell and Catherine Young, all of Newport News; three brothers-in-law, Harold Bell, Elder Lawrence Jones and Pearl Ellis; one daughter-in-law, Marie Young; two sons-in-law, Curtis Gwaltney and Russell Doswell; 48 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 10 great- great-grandchildren; five great-great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Homegoing services will be held at noon today at Lebanon Baptist Church with Elder Lawrence Jones, officiating.
Interment will be in Booker T. Memorial Park, Wakefield.
Mrs. Young will be viewed at the church one hour prior to the service Friday.
Arrangements are being handled by Poole’s Funeral Home.
