SMITHFIELD—A Smithfield man is in jail, charged with second-degree murder and two other felonies, following the death of another man in unusual circumstances early Friday morning.
Kevin Lamont Spriggs, 23, of Smithfield Apartments Lane, was arrested at 9:30 a.m. Friday, about nine hours after Desmond D. Johnson, 29, of Courthouse Highway, was shot, police said Tuesday.
Witnesses told police they had overheard an argument between the men, leading investigators to question Spriggs, according to Sgt. M.R. Kitchen, a spokesman for the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Department.
Police originally responded to a report of an auto accident and found Johnson unconscious behind the wheel of his silver BMW, which had crashed into a restaurant under renovation in the 15000 block of Scott’s Factory Road.
According to Kitchen, investigators determined that Johnson had been shot in the Smithfield Heights neighborhood, and then drove across Scotts Factory Road, through a ditch and into the building.
He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In addition to the murder count, Spriggs faces charges of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Investigators E.R. Gardener and T.W. Glaser are working the case.
