The town of Boykins will have its first Pride Day on Saturday.

A day set aside to work on beautifying the town, the idea originated in a meeting of the Main Street Initiative, a group of about 40 members that was formed to &uot;try to get the downtown area looking nice,&uot; Boykins Mayor Spier Edwards said.

&uot; We’re just trying to get people together to do a little scraping and a little painting,&uot; he said.

So members of the Main Street Initiative and residents of the town have been invited to meet in front of The Butcher Block on Main Street at 8 a.m. for a day of scraping and painting buildings.

Edward said 150 fliers have been sent out encouraging residents to participate in this project to &uot;bring downtown back.&uot; He hopes that improving the look of downtown will have a positive impact on businesses in the area. Other areas of the town are expected to be addressed at a later date.

Those participating in Pride Day have been asked to bring a paintbrush, paint bucket and a scraper. The paint will be provided by downtown building owners.

&uot;If you can’t work, bring your lawn chair,&uot; Edwards said.
