SMITHFIELD—James “Jake” William Meyers, 60,
died unexpectedly at his Smithfield home, June 14, 2008.
Mr. Meyers was born Sept. 15, 1947, in Altoona, Pa.
After a heart attack in 1994, while living in Herndon, Va., he retired after working 15 years in the Northern Virginia area for Steris Corporation, for the Mentor, Ohio, medical service company.
In 2000, he and his wife moved to Smithfield, where he enjoyed years of fishing, boating and enjoying new friends. His passion was ‘giving’ to all of those who needed someone or something in their time of need.
He was a very generous man, and a very good friend to his buddies at the Battery Park Grill, where he will be truly missed.
The family extends a special thanks to Robert Cox who was there for Jim at the very end.
Survivors include his devoted wife and best friend of 28 years, Cheryl, and her daughter, Joy Guilford, who resides in Coral Springs, Fla.; his in-laws, Thomas and Doris Kernan, and sister-in-law, Ginnie Kernan, all of Youngstown, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee W. and Frances Neff Meyers of Ft. Meyers, Fla., and his only ‘daughter,’ his loyal, constant companion of 16 years, Angie, his loving Cocker Spaniel.
His family received friends Tuesday in Colonial Funeral Home. Burial was private.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Isle of Wight Humane Society, P.O. Box 273, Smithfield, 23430, or to any SPCA of choice, as Jim loved animals.
Arrangements were in the care of Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield.
