Smithfield honors outgoing mayor

SMITHFIELD-Mayor James Chapman was honored by the Smithfield Town Council Tuesday night for his 30 years of service to the town.

The council, during its regularly scheduled meeting, passed a resolution to name the meeting room in the Smithfield Center the James B. Chapman Chamber.

Chapman did not seek re-election this spring.

In addition to having the meeting room named for him, Chapman received a commemorative gavel.

Further appreciation was expressed by residents and town employees.

Council member Florine Moore, who has served the longest with Chapman, expressed her gratitude for his leadership, guidance and kindness.

In other business, the council took no action its proposed $10.7 million 2009 fiscal year budget that includes no change in the tax rate. The council is expected to vote on the budget at its June 23 meeting at 5:30 p.m.
