FHS netters advance

RAPPAHANNOCK-The Franklin High School girls’ tennis team continued its trek through Region A on Tuesday with a 5-1 win over Rappahannock High School, in a match that was closer than the score indicated.

The Lady Broncos will play Mathews High School, a 5-0 winner over Northampton High, in the Group A Region A team finals on Thursday at the Howard Mast Tennis Center in Suffolk.

Franklin won the No. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles matches. Doubles play was suspended.

At No. 2 singles, Franklin’s Carrie Webber and Rappahannock’s Jessica Bronner battled for three hours before Webber came out on top 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. At sixth singles, Franklin’s Jessica Ruffin and Rappahannock’s LeighAnn Morris also played a marathon with Ruffin pulling it out 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.

The top singles and doubles teams from Franklin were participating in the Group A Region A individual tournament starting Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Howard Mast Courts in Suffolk. Rain location is the YMCA in Franklin.
