WINDSOR-The Windsor High School softball team sits atop the Tri-Rivers District standings for good reason: The team takes advantage of what it’s given.

Wednesday, the Lady Dukes scored four runs on passed balls and knocked off non-district opponent Northampton High School 5-3.

Without a player with more than one hit, Windsor (8-6) took advantage of miscues and beat the Lady Yellow Jackets for the second time this season.

&uot;We won the other day 3-2 and scored on three passed balls,&uot; said Windsor head coach Chuck Parish. &uot;We get on base and we’ve got to move and we’ve got to take advantage of that. We didn’t hit or bunt as much as I like. We’ve got to work on those things. We limited our mistakes and played well defensively and made the routine plays.&uot;

Windsor is 5-0 in the Tri-Rivers District going into Friday’s home game against Surry County. The Lady Dukes also have a home game against Franklin and a road game against Charles City next week. The Tri-Rivers District Tournament begins May 19 at Windsor, with the championship game on May 21 at the same site. The Lady Dukes hope to be the top seed going into the tournament. The top two teams go on to the regionals, which begin after Memorial Day.

Parish said his team has had a tough non-district schedule this season, which has helped it perform well in district play.

&uot;We played Rappahannock twice, NSA, Tidewater Academy and Northampton, and they are a good ball club,&uot; he said. &uot;We haven’t dodged anybody on the schedule. We have played some good softball teams, and that’s how we are going to get better.&uot;

Parish said the Lady Dukes are a special group this season.

&uot;The kids are working hard. We have kids that play different positions and they come after it,&uot; he said. &uot;They are having fun. Fundamentally they are getting better each day. They play hard and they like to work.&uot;
