MIDLOTHIAN—A plane bound for Franklin crashed into a home in Chesterfield County on Sunday, killing both people on board the plane and critically injuring a person in the house.
The deceased were identified by State Police as pilot Joseph Anthony Grana Jr., 40, of Florham Park, N.J., and his father, Joseph Anthony Grana Sr., 73, of Richmond.
According to State Police spokesperson Sgt. Tom Cunningham, family members said Grana Jr. was an experienced pilot.
The plane had left Essex County, N.J., before flying into Chesterfield on Friday.
Franklin Municipal Airport Manager Jimmy Gray said he couldn’t speculate on why the plane may have been destined for the city.
“It is not a local plane,” he said. “I don’t have one with that tail number registered here.”
Cunningham said he did not know why the plane was planning a stop in Franklin.
He said out of respect for the family, he hadn’t interviewed them in depth.
The crash remained under investigation.
