George W. Reese Jr.

RICHMOND—George W. Reese Jr., 79, retired M.D. of Richmond, died April 21, 2008.
Born in Courtland, to Gertrude Manry Reese and George W. Reese (both deceased), he graduated as cadet officer from Richmond’s Thomas Jefferson High School, then Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Richmond in 1951.
Receiving a medical degree from MCV, he interned at Depaul Hospital in Norfolk, served as Air Force medical officer in Japan, leaving as a major.
He entered private practice in South Boston, then for almost four decades in Richmond.
As a relative of Confederate general and post-war Republican U.S. Senator William Mahone, George loved Virginia, war history, athletic events and revisiting family and friends in Southampton County, especially his only sibling, Emily R. Smith, wife of Charles H. Smith Jr., in Charlottesville; niece, Tarina, wife of Bernard Esclapez, of Paris, France and Charlottesville and their children, Christopher of Paris (with wife Olesya of Paris and Russia) and Allison Esclapez Stacy (with husband, Carl Stacy); and great-grand-nieces, Anna and Leah of Charlottesville; niece, Suzanne Smith of Sante Fe; niece, Betty, wife of Scott Hesaltine, of Richmond and their daughters, Julie, Emily and Tarina; nephew, Charles H. Smith III and wife, Virginia Van Hook Smith, of Charlottesville and their son, Charles M. Smith.
Graveside services was held Thursday at Manry-Mahone Cemetery, Courtland.
