Alice H. Smith

HAMPTON—Alice Hutcheson Smith, a longtime resident of Hampton, died April 22, 2008, in Sentara CarePlex Hospital.

She was the widow of James A. Smith. She was born in Isle of Wight County Sept. 20, 1914, to the late Edward and Clara Myrick Hutcheson.

Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church an active member of the Ladies of St. Rose, the Rosary Prayer Group for shut-ins, a volunteer of Holy Family Retreat House for many years, a friend and consoler to many, especially to the sick and nursing home residents.

She was employed by the Redemptorist Fathers at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Newport News until it closed in 1968.

She continued her work at St. Joseph Catholic Church until 1996.

Due to her outstanding dedication, she became an Oblate of the Redemptorist Order in 1967.

Survivors include James Hutcheson of Matawon, N.J., Clara Jones of Portsmouth, Joseph Artis of Norfolk, Eloise Hogue of Hampton; and several other nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Hampton, by Father Paul Stephen Holt.

Interment will follow in Hampton National Cemetery, Phoebus Section.

Family and friends are to assemble at the chapel by 9:30 a.m. today.
