George S. Pitts Jr.

APEX, N.C.—George Samuel Pitts Jr., 84, died April 16, 2008.
Mr. Pitts was born in Knoxville, Tenn., on March 1, 1924, to the late George Samuel Pitts Sr. and Cordelia Woody Pitts.
After graduation from Farragut High School in 1942, he served his country in the 1348th Army Air Force Unit from 1943-46, including a 15-month deployment to Burma.
During his Army service, he met Lorraine Adelaide Stone, who would become his wife of 64 years. George, Lorraine, and their family lived in Knoxville, where he enjoyed a successful career in sales.
He received numerous Salesman of the Year awards during his employment with Rodgers Cadillac, Delmar Haynes Pontiac, and Knoxville Motor Company.
Upon his retirement in 1991, George and Lorraine moved to Apex.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
For the last five years, he was devoted to the care of his wife Lorraine, who had advanced Alzheimer’s, until her death in January 2008.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Harold Stooksbury; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Nan Pitts; half-brother, Raymond Pitts; and daughter-in-law, Jane Godbehere Pitts.
Survivors include a son, George S. Pitts III and wife Valerie Renee of Bluff City, Tenn.; a daughter, Kathilyn P. Sharp of Apex; a son, Michael C. Pitts and wife Ruth of Smithfield; grandchildren, Leigh Herber, John David Pitts, Anne Pitts, Kelli Sharp and Jeffrey Sharp; and his seven nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Apex United Methodist Church, 100 S. Hughes St., Apex, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Apex United Methodist Church Building Fund, 100 S. Hughes St., Apex, NC 27502.
