COURTLAND—Police are looking for three or more people who broke into Crawford’s Small Engine Repair shop on Route 460 last weekend and stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

Video images from the shop’s security camera showed at least three people breaking into the shop around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and stealing $8,000 worth of lawn equipment, according to Detective Cpl. Richard Morris, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

Morris said the video also showed the thieves loading a U-Haul truck with the stolen equipment, then driving away.

The thieves took garden tillers, push mowers, walk-behind mowers and two riding mowers.

Police identified distinctive markings on the outside of the U-Haul vehicle, which they then used to trace it back to a rental company in Norfolk, where they served a search warrant and retrieved rental information on Thursday.

He said investigators have at least one suspect, but they had not made any arrests.

Detective Sgt. J.R. Ricks is investigating the case and looking into possible ties with other recent burglaries in Isle of Wight and the surrounding area, Morris said.
