Virginia J. Hayes

SMITHFIELD—Virginia J. Hayes, 93, died April 10, 2008.
Mrs. Hayes was born Jan. 19, 1915, in Petersburg, to the late William W. Jones and Ida E. Jones and was lovingly raised by Mr. Jones and Nannie Bell Hillebrand Jones.
She was preceded in death by Clifton Hayes Sr., her husband of 54 years and her brother, William Hillebrand Jones.
Survivors include her sons, Clifton Upton Hayes Jr. and wife Nancy of Yorktown and William J. Hayes and wife LaRue; her daughter, Nancy Hayes Faison and husband Robert L. Faison III, both of Smithfield; her five grandchildren, Carol Elizabeth and husband Lee Steider, Clifton Marshall Hayes, Adam William Hayes and wife Amanda, Aaron Thomas Hayes and Sarah Elizabeth Faison; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan Lee Steider and Annabelle Virginia Steider; sister-in-law, Betty Jane Jones;; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a founding member of Parkview United Methodist Church, Newport News, president of the WMU at Hilton Baptist Church and a member of Eastern Star and the Virginia Orchid Society.
With Upton, her husband, she retired from Newport News to Smithfield, where she loved to work n her property and tend her flowers, especially her orchids.
She was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday followed by a
service of worship at 3 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home, 1515 S. Church St., Smithfield.
The Revs. Donald R. Rhoton and Nancy Hayes will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Luke’s Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Hilton Baptist Church, Newport News or Parkview United Methodist Church in Newport News.
