COURTLAND-Southampton Academy’s varsity soccer team evened its record at 4-4 Thursday night with a 5-0 win over Brunswick Academy.
Eighth-grader Drey Chrysatosmous led the Raiders in scoring with a hat trick (three goals), and single goals were scored by sophomores Craig New and Brett Moore. Senior goalkeeper Andrew Edwards recorded his first shutout of the season.
The Raiders had won two conference matches in a row heading into a Friday night road match against Kenston Forest.
On the season, SA has posted victories over Windsor High, Isle of Wight Academy and Surry County High, in addition to Brunswick. The Raiders’ defeats have come at the hands of Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (twice), Kenston Forest and Fuqua Academy. The Raiders are coached by Jamie Weist and Will Councill.
Two SA senior standouts, Sarah MacFarland and Will Hastings, are receiving attention from college scouts. Weist said Virginia Military Institute, Ferrum, Randolph and Chowan University have inquired about the two playing at the next level.
The SA junior-varsity soccer team, under the direction of first-year coach Adam Berryman, is 4-0 on the season with wins over Rock Church School (twice), Fuqua and Windsor.
