COURTLAND-The Virginia Symphony Orchestra makes its annual appearance in concert at Southampton High School Saturday at 8 p.m.

Sponsored by the Franklin-Southampton Concert Association, the orchestra is brought back through the generosity of the Camp Foundation and is open to the public.

&uot;We’re very indebted to the foundation for sponsoring this wonderful group,&uot; said association President Nancy Rowe. &uot;We urge the public to attend. The orchestra always gives an outstanding performance.&uot;

Under the direction of musical director JoAnn Falletta, the performance will be conducted this year by 30-year-old Assistant Conductor Matt Kraemer.

The new conductor, who was selected for his &uot;musical skills, enthusiasm and dedication to excellence,&uot; comes to the Virginia Symphony from Akron, Ohio.

He joins one of the nation’s top symphonies, which has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and at Carnegie Hall in New York among its approximately 140 concerts annually.

&uot;We’re expecting a night of wonderful entertainment,&uot; said Rowe. &uot;This is a great opportunity to see and hear a well-known regional orchestra close to home.&uot;
