FRANKLIN—During a public hearing at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, three residents were nominated for a school board seat that will be vacated by Richard Thomas at the end of this month.
Thomas, at-large member, will move to Savannah, Ga. He has said he can serve through April but would have to travel for the meeting, as he is relocating this weekend.
Tom Ellington of Hunterdale Road nominated David Benton, who is a former Franklin School Board chairman.
Suggested for the seat by Greg McLemore of Madison Street was Sharon Watson, education director for the Boys & Girls Club Franklin Unit and former teacher.
Queens Lane resident Phyllis Crum was nominated by her husband, Ellis. She is service delivery coordinator for the local American Red Cross and chairwoman of the school system’s Special Education Advisory Committee.
Both McLemore and Ellis Crum are candidates for mayor in the May election.
The council has set a tentative interview date with the candidates for April 1, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
