FRANKLIN—A resident of Southampton Meadows trailer park was treated and released from Southampton Memorial Hospital on Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself in the head.

Dario Winborne, 18, told police he found a small-caliber handgun and was “examining it” when it discharged, leaving a superficial wound on his forehead, according to Detective Cpl. Richard Morris, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s office.

Winborne was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. Hospital workers called police at about 6 p.m. to report a man with a gunshot wound to his head. Morris said police responded to the emergency room and to Southampton Meadows. They were unable to find the gun.

Winborne was outside at the time of the shooting, with nobody around him. There were no other injuries.

There were no charges stemming from the incident.
