SMITHFIELD-Land owned by Isle of Wight County in the town of Smithfield has been deeded to the town for future development.

The town council was notified at its meeting Tuesday night by Al Casteen that 2.68 acres, including all structures on the property, had been conveyed to the town by the county. Casteen is the Smithfield District member of the county’s Board of Supervisors.

According to Town Manager Peter Stephenson, the site at James and Washington streets in the town’s historic district could possibly be used to relocate several families in the Pinewood Heights area.

He said the town is working with the Habitat for Humanity to determine how this may be done.
