FRANKLIN—Lloyd Emerson Rice Jr., 81, a resident of the Village at Woods Edge, for 1 1/2 years, died Jan. 31, 2008.
Mr. Rice was born in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Lloyd Emerson and Beatrice O’Dell Rice and moved to Norfolk when he was 11 years old.
He was predeceased by his first wife of 56 years, Ruth Elizabeth Harris Rice, a baby brother, John, brother, Charles, sister, Beatrice Andreon, and a son Lloyd Emerson Rice III.
He was a Navy veteran of WW II, serving in the Pacific as a signalman aboard the USS Colorado.
He was retired from the Army Corps of Engineers and served as Chief of Real Estate for many years.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4809, and a member of American Legion Post 113 in Virginia Beach and attended High Street United Methodist Church in Franklin. He enjoyed traveling and deer hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine L’Heureux Rice; one daughter, Ruth Ann Johnson and husband Leon of Jennings, Fla.; two sons, Ronald Lee Rice and wife Shannon Lea of Springfield and John Adreon Rice of Norfolk; a sister, Marcia Lindemann of Norfolk and a brother, Louis Rice of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Ryan and Matt Rice of Springfield, Adreon Willingham and husband Jeffrey of Anniston, Ala.; one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Turley of Birmingham, Ala.; three step-children, Nancy Long, Marcia Fisher, Rebecca Weyant; seven step-grandchildren, Melissa Strickland, Aubrey Garner, Erica Fisher, Patrick Fisher, Angela Weyant, Allison Kowalski, Sossity Hervey; four step-great-grandchildren, Nadine Booth, Colby and Haley Garner, and Krystin Kowalski.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at High Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Susan Reaves officiating.
Burial, with military honors, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk.
