Lewis S. Babb

COURTLAND—Lewis Spurgeon Babb, 78, died Jan. 30, 2008.

Mr. Babb was born Jan. 17, 1930 in Southampton County, a son of the late Henry David and Maie Vaughan Babb.

He was predeceased by his wife of 34 years, Ruth Cobb Babb, and eight siblings including David &uot;Speed&uot; Babb.

He was a lifelong member of Courtland United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities including choir, Sunday School teacher, and Administrative Council with two terms as Chairman.

He was a 50-year member of the Courtland Ruritan Club, serving two terms as President, a charter member of

both Courtland Volunteer Fire Department, and Courtland Rescue Squad.

He volunteered at the Southampton County Historical Society and Agricultural Museum and was retired from J.T. Barham & Co. after 40 years service.

Survivors include many loving in-laws, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Courtland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Gordon officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home and suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Courtland United Methodist Church, 22416 Main Street, Courtland, Va. 23837 or the American Cancer Society, c/o Kathy Worrell, 717 Fairview Drive, Franklin, Va. 23851.
