Friday night hoops: Big third quarter lifts SHS girls

COURTLAND-The Southampton High School Lady Indians outscored Tabb High 20-7 in the third quarter Friday night en route to a 62-46 win in Bay Rivers District play.
Anita Ricks, who had 10 points in the third quarter, finished with 31 points, 17 rebounds and 8 assists. Samantha Urquhart had 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Before the game, SHS Athletic Director Littleton Parker held a brief recognition program saluting Urquhart, a junior power forward, for reaching the 1,000-point mark in her high school career. She was presented a certificate of achievement and game ball.
On hand for the ceremony were her parents, Charles and Dorothy Urquhart, and SHS Coach Aronda Bell.
In other area hoops action Friday:
* Franklin High’s boys whipped Appomattox Regional Governor’s School 73-56 on the road.
* Southampton Academy downed Kenston Forest 62-32 behind William Doyle’s 22 points.
* Isle of Wight Academy’s boys dropped a 73-41 road decision to Metro Conference powerhouse Atlantic Shores.
* Nansemond-Suffolk Academy dropped a pair of games. The boys team lost 71-56 to Norfolk Christian on the road. The girls fell 38-30 to NC at home.
