SUFFOLK—Mable Alfreda “Freda” Anderson,49, of the 800 block of Ashley Ave., died Jan. 8, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 13, 1958, to Alfred D. Taylor and Jestine Greene-Taylor in Franklin.

Mrs. Anderson was a native of Suffolk, she attended Suffolk Public Schools. She was formerly employed by the Salvation Army.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Jestine Greene- Taylor and stepfather, William “Candy Man” Lawrence.

Survivors include a son, Marcus A. Taylor of Brooklyn, N.Y.; husband, Robert T. Anderson Jr. of Suffolk; sister, Laverne Fauci (Joseph) of Virginia Beach; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Professional floral arrangements provided by Liz Creations.

Hilda A. Arcese

PORTSMOUTH—Hilda Allmond Arcese, 86, died Jan. 13, 2008.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Ivor.

Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is in charge of arrangements.

Eunice F. Baines

SUFFOLK—Eunice Fussell Baines, 85, died Jan. 11, 2008, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

She was born March 13, 1922, in Sardis, Tenn.

Mrs. Baines was the daughter of Samuel Jenkins Fussell and Eula Goff Fussell, who predeceased her.

She was the widow of David H. Baines and was also predeceased by a baby brother.

She was a math professor at Freed Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn., and was a member of Suffolk Church of Christ.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law and family, Judy B. Whitley and John R. Whitley, grandson, Matthew D. and wife Patricia, great-grandchildren, Matthew and Ashley Whitley, grandson, J. Mark Whitley, all of Windsor and his fiancee Stephanie Hall and her daughter Grace of Suffolk; and daughter and son-in-law, Linda B. Horne and David W. Horne and family, grandson, Jonathan Horne, granddaughter, Brittany Horne, all of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Ruth Watson and Marjorie Pickens of Jackson, Tenn.; and by nieces and nephews and her special cousin, Ruby of Tennessee.

A funeral was held Sunday in Parr Funeral Home and Crematory with Minister Skip Francis officiating.

Burial followed in Holly Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, Suffolk Chapter, 604 Constance Woods Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Jesse L. Dickens

MURFREESBORO, N.C.—Jesse Lee “Sugar Bear” Dickens, 53, a native of Edgecombe County, died Jan. 7, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie, N.C.

Mr. Dickens retired from the US Army as SP4. He had also retired from Carroll Foods.

Survivors include his wife, Pearlie Mae Dickens of Murfreesboro; a son, Jesse B. Dickens of Murfreesboro; daughters, Kimberly Ann Dickens of Baltimore, Md., Jacquesha Harrison and Jessicia Harrison, both of Gates, N.C.; a brother, Julius Dickens of Conway,

N.C.; sisters, Sarah Dickens of Conway and Irene Joyner of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square, by the Rev. Winslow Hagans.

Burial was in Second Baptist Church Creeksville Cemetery, Murfreesboro.

Edna H. Harper

FRANKLIN—Edna H. Holland of Delaware Road, died Jan. 11, 2008, while a patient in Southampton Memorial

Hospital.

Mrs. Holland was a member of White Oak Spring Baptist Church, where she served on the church choir and a member of the missionary ministry until her health failed.

Early in life, she met and married Wilbur H. Harper and later united in marriage with David H. Holland.

Occupationally, she was a nurse’s aide for 30 years at Southampton Memorial Hospital and many years ago, she assisted Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Inc., by welcoming persons who came to the funeral home as well as greeting those who called.

She was also a member of St. Mary’s Temple No. 152.

Survivors include one son, Wilbur R. Harper and wife Sarah; one sister, Cassie M. Powell and husband Jesse Powell of Roanoke; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 25 stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in White Oak Spring Baptist Church, 26125 Delaware Road, Franklin, with Pastor Eddie Lee delivering the eulogy.

Burial will be in Southview Cemetery.

On the day of service, her remains will be placed in church for viewing by 11:30 a.m.

Sam H. Jones

CONWAY, N.C.—Sam Henry Jones, 79, died at his home in Conway, Jan. 12, 2008.

Mr. Jones had been preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Lalah Wheeler Jones and a sister-in-law, Olean B. Jones.

A native of Northampton County, he was an area farmer, a member of Conway Baptist Church attending the Goodwill Bible Class and was a United States Army veteran serving toward the end of the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include one brother, Robert L. Jones Sr. of Franklin; one sister, Shelby J. Parker and husband Edgar of Franklin; three nephews, Rob Jones of Richmond, John Jones of Franklin and Larry Parker of Mechanicsville; one niece, Susan P. Bergsagel of Roswell, Ga.; two great-nephews, Parker Bergsagel and Sam Davis Bergsagel; four great-nieces, Maggie, Hannah and Liza Parker and Caroline Shelby Bergsagel; and numerous cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Conway Baptist Church with the Revs. Willie McLawhorn

and James Hester presiding.

Burial will follow in the Town of Conway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Bridgers Funeral Home Inc. In Conway, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and have requested tht anyone wishing to share a memorial gift, do so to Conway Baptist Church, P.O. Box 160, Conway, N.C. 27820.

Viola L. Owens

FRANKLIN—Viola Lee Owens of Pocahontas Avenue, died Jan. 11, 2008.

A homegoing service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Piney Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Alfred Brown delivering the words of comfort.

Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.

Bernice B. Pierce

SUFFOLK—Bernice Woodard Boyd Pierce, of 200 Eley Court, in the 90th year of her life, died Jan. 10, 2008, in the quietness and peacefulness of her residence.

Mrs. Pierce was a native of Southampton County and was daughter of the late Nathaniel and Catherine Roberts Woodard and the widow of the Rev. Ruben Pierce.

She retired in 1997 from domestic work. She was a devoted member of St. Timothy Baptist Church where she served on the Senior Usher Board and Missionary Board.

Survivors include her foster daughter, Roslyn Bernice Scott of Suffolk and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and other relatives.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Timothy Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Thomas Harden and the Rev. Joseph Chapman Jr.

Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will be at 200 Eley Court.
