NEWSOMS—Petty Officer 1st class Mark W. Bonse, 45, died Dec. 23, 2007, at UNC Cancer Center.

He had been in the U.S. Navy for more than 20 years at the time of his death.

Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., his family later moved to Toledo, Ohio.

He was a 2001 graduate of Southern Illinois University with a BA in electronics management.

He proudly fought in the wars against terrorism in and around the Persian Gulf during his Naval career.

Survivors include his wife Linda Bonse of Newsoms; sons Michael J. Bonse of Indiana and Sgt. Robert W. Bonse of Washington; his mother Judith A. Bonse of Michigan; one sister Judy Tobian of Ohio; two brothers Thomas Bonse of Tennessee and Patrick Bonse of Italy; two daughters-in-law and two granddaughters.

His family will a private memorial service at Naval Station Norfolk today.

After cremation Petty Officer Bonse will have a military burial at sea.
