Merle S. West

SMITHFIELD— Merle Lorraine Scott West, 92, wife of the late Jesse Lankford West, died Dec. 18, 2007.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County, a homemaker and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four siblings.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances West Porter of Newport News and Richie West Capps and husband Louis D. of Sandston; son, William Lankford West and wife Becky of Williamsburg; special friend, Patricia Hodges West of Newport News; four granddaughters, Kathleen Haugdahl and husband Jon, Laura Harrison and husband Dan, Willeford McFall and husband Bill, and Martha M. Porter, all of Newport News; and eight great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; two half-sisters, Alice S. Thornton of Newport News and Marian S. Perini of Walla Walla, Wash.; one half-brother, Floyd Barham Scott of Surry; and many nieces and nephews.

A Life Celebration Service will be held Thursday at Bethany United Methodist Church, 13717 Bethany Church Road, Smithfield, with the Rev. Lowell Petry officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Friends may visit at other times at the home of Frances Porter in Newport News.
