Jane D. Lassiter

BOYKINS—Jane Draper Lassiter, 86, died Dec. 11, 2007.

Mrs. Lassiter was born Sept. 18, 1921 in Dunn, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Eugene Talmadge and Mabel Smith Draper and was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Albert Kenneth Lassiter.

A graduate of James Madison University, Jane began her professional career as a lunchroom supervisor at Boykins School and then became a full-time homemaker until her three children were in school.

She started as a Social Worker at Southampton County Welfare department in 1958 and was then the first supervisor at the Department of Social Services for the county Food Stamp program. As the agency grew, she was the Social Work Supervisor and, for the last five years of her 28 year career, she was Assistant Director.

She represented Southampton County for 30 years on the Board of Directors for Southeastern Senior Services, continuing for six years after she retired from the Department of Social Services.

She was active in Boykins United Methodist Church as Sunday school teacher, worker with MYF, communion steward and church treasurer since 1992.

She was an officer of Boykins United Methodist Women in multiple positions and on the church administrative board for many years. She was a regular volunteer with the church food pantry. Jane had been a member of Tarrara Woman’s Club for over sixty years, serving three two-year terms as president as well as secretary, treasurer and chairman of many of the club committees.

She enjoyed being of service to members of the community and volunteering where she could help.

Survivors include her daughter, Marcia L. Garriss of Boykins; two sons, Ken Lassiter and wife, Sheila of Raleigh, N.C. and Gene Lassiter of Dothan, Ala.; a sister, Genie D. Councill of Franklin; sisters-in-law, Mary Frances S. Draper of Seaboard, N.C. and Inez S. Lassiter of Boykins; brother-in-law, Roy A. Lassiter and wife, Kitty, of Boykins;

four granddaughters, Karen G. Sledge and husband, Jodie, Amy G. Srackangast, Kira Lassiter and Candi Lassiter; a grandson, Joey Lassiter; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Sledge, Parker and Connor Srackangast and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Boykins United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Baugham officiating. Interment will follow in Beechwood Cemetery.
