Board must rethink benefit

To the Editor:

For more than 40 years, we have struggled to pay high premiums for hospitalization insurance.

The last 10 years I, myself, have paid a premium of more than $1,200 a month for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield through a group plan with Farm Bureau. I have just become of age to receive help through the government by reaching that golden age of 65 so I am entitled to Medicare.

The same month I received this benefit I read in The Tidewater News that our local governing body is considering that they deserve to get this benefit from our tax dollars as a benefit.

I agree with Glenn Updike this is something we need to fight. What makes this governing board think for one minute that they are entitled to this benefit?

Most places of employment do not give this benefit unless you are a full-time employee. I think it is time for the board of supervisors to rethink their position on this matter. Have you asked the people in your district if they are willing to pay your hospitalization is paid free and clear? Why can’t you wait like all of us do and reach the golden age of 65 and get your free help from the feds? We have enough to bear as citizens.

I say bah, hum bug to this request.
