SUFFOLK—Don Wayne Newsome Sr., 56, of the 500 block of Factory Street, died Nov. 11, 2007, in Sentara Obici Hospital.

Mr. Newsome was born in Southampton County. He was a shipping loader for Gwaltney of Portsmouth.

He was a member of Tabernacle Christian Church, Suffolk, where he was a former deacon, former Sunday school superintendent and a member of the Couples Ministry and Men’s Fellowship Ministry.

He attended Suffolk public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in Jersey City, N.J.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Kee “Jenny” Newsome; two daughters, Nina Alexander (Garloin) and Sherita Turner (Marcus), both of Portsmouth; stepdaughter, Beatrix Mitchell of Suffolk; son, Don W. Newsome Jr. (Cassandra) of Newport News; stepson, Peter J. Mitchell of Suffolk; mother, Doretha Newsome of Suffolk; sister, Quincy A. Brown of Richmond, Va.; four brothers, James Lawrence Newsome of London, England, Randy Nicholson (Cheryl) of Portsmouth, Glaster Peoples of Suffolk and Eric Johnson of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews including a very devoted nephew, the Rev. Antonio Newsome of Portsmouth; cousins including a special one, Minister Virginia N. Cary (Ronald) of Drewryville; and other relatives and friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Walter Nicholson Sr. and the man who raised him, Willie “Butch” Jones.

A funeral will be held at noon Saturday in New Mount Joy Food for Living Ministries Inc., Suffolk, by the Rev. Melvin Boone.

Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery, Suffolk.

The body will be taken to Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk, for viewing today from noon to 9 p.m.

The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Saturday. The family will assemble at 500 Factory St., Suffolk, for the procession to the church.
