INDEPENDENCE—George Ivey Jr., 75, died Nov. 8, 2007.

Mr. Ivey was born Feb. 13, 1932. He was preceded in death by his parents, George R. Ivey Sr. and Annie Mae Parker Ivey; brothers, James Ivey, George H. Ivey and Joseph Ivey; sisters, Lois Council, Ruth Williamson and Gertrude Buchanan.

Survivors include his wife, Betty A. Ivey of Independence; sons, Steve Ivey and wife Lynn of Zuni, Richard L. Ivey of Randelman, N.C., George R. Ivey III and wife Shaye of Sparta, N.C., and a stepson, Jerry Perry Jr. of Suffolk; daughters, Pam Ivey Sadler and husband Jerry of Suffolk and Linda Andrews and husband Dale of Harrellsville, N.C.; one brother, Elbert Ivey and wife Viola of Suffolk; grandchildren, Brandon and Kristen Ivey, Shaun Edwards, Hank and Jason Stieh and Carley Rideout; and one stepgrandchild, Heather Perry; several nieces and nephews.

He was known to some as Bill. He worked at Union Camp Corp. now International Paper, for 44 years as a crane operator in the woodyard.

Before moving to Independence, he was an active member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.

He then became a very active member of Mountain View Baptist Church where he cooked for special occasions and fund-raisers.

He loved helping his son and daughter, Steve and Pam cook with The Nothin “Butt” Fun cook team.

He was a lifetime member of the Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad and Scuba Diving Team, Suffolk Auxiliary, a former professional wrestler and a member of the National Guard.

Most importantly he was a born again Christian and loved the Lord.

Services were held at Mountain View Baptist Church, Independence, on Nov. 11. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
