Windsor spanks Sussex Central

SUSSEX—Windsor High School improved to 6-2 overall and claimed the driver’s seat in the Tri-Rivers District with a 58-38 rout of Sussex Central on Friday.

The Dukes forced four turnovers and rolled up 385 yards of total yards in holding off the host Tigers, who piled up 509 total yards.

The teams combined for 64

points in the third quarter alone.

Sussex Central dropped to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the Tri-Rivers District.

The Tigers struck first on a 64-yard touchdown run by Thomas Gholson on the opening play of the game that made the score 6-0. The conversion attempt failed.

The Dukes responded by taking the lead 8-6 on a 24-yard touchdown run by senior Taury Pittman with 9:01 left in the first quarter. The conversion attempt was good. The Dukes then made it 14-6 on a 13-yard fumble return for a touchdown by junior Solomon Simmons with 2:09 left to play in the first quarter. The conversion attempt failed.

The Tigers cut the Dukes’ lead to 14-12 with 1:11 left in the second quarter when Tyrell Shaw ran the ball in from 1 yard to get the score. The conversion attempt failed.

The Dukes started out the second half by scoring on a 66-yard screen pass from junior Kwamane Harris to sophomore Layfette Murphy that made it 20-12 with 11:42 left in the third quarter. The conversion attempt failed.

The Dukes made it 28-12 on an 8-yard run by Murphy with 10:39 left in the third quarter. The conversion attempt was good. The Tigers then bounced back and cut the score to 28-18 on a 69-yard touchdown run by Tabari Turner with 8:55 left in the third. The conversion attempt failed.

The Dukes made it 36-18 on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Harris to senior Ryan Acey with 6:37 left in the third. The conversion attempt was good. The Dukes ran the score to 44-18 on a 25-yard touchdown run by Harris with 5:10 left in the third. The conversion attempt was good. The Tigers pulled within 44-26 on an 88-yard run by Kevin Perry with 3:16 left in the third. The conversion attempt was good. The Dukes then made it 50-26 on a 52-yard run by Murphy with 3:05 left in the third quarter. The conversion attempt was no good. The Tigers then made it 50-32 on a 66-yard touchdown run by Tabari Turner with 2:48 left in the third quarter. The conversion attempt failed. The Dukes’ final touchdown came on a 51-yard touchdown run by Murphy with 1:56 left in the third quarter that made it 58-30. The conversion attempt was good.

The final touchdown of the game for the Tigers came on a 29-yard touchdown run by Perry with 8:16 left in the fourth quarter that made it 58-38. The conversion attempt was good.

The star of the game was sophomore Murphy, who had 10 rushes for 136 yards and three touchdowns. Murphy also had three catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Dukes head coach Bruce Carroll said, &uot;We’ve still got some work to do and have two more games left to play.&uot;

&uot;The coaching staff worked really hard this week; therefore, the kids responded well,&uot; Carroll said. &uot;We had a chance earlier to put the game away.&uot;

The Dukes will be looking for an upset as they play host to the Surry County High School Cougars at 7 p.m. Friday. Surry also is unbeaten in district play.

Sussex Central will be looking for its first district win as it travels to Charles City for a 7 p.m. game on Friday.
