QUANTICO—Southampton Academy opened with a 26-0 lead in the second quarter en route to a 38-20 win over Quantico High School in a non-district football game Friday night.
SA opened the scoring on the first play of the game. Tyler Lass hit Will Hastings with a 60-yard touchdown pass. Lass booted the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
With 8:15 to play in the first quarter, Robert Marks scored on an 8-yard run. The kick failed and the Raiders held the lead at 13-0.
With 2:23 to play in the first quarter, Hastings scored again, this time on an 18-yard run. The Raiders went up 26-0 when Lass connected with Paul Edwards on a 51-yard touchdown pass and also kicked the extra point.
SA made the lead more comfortable at 32-0 on a 7-yard touchdown run by Tim Chrysostomou to open the third quarter.
Michael Milteer scored the last touchdown for the Raiders on an 8-yard run with one minute to play.
Dale Marks, Southampton Academy head coach, said the Raiders (6-2) played their second string after taking the big lead.
&uot;We have had a couple of opponents the last few weeks that haven’t been strong, so our subs got a lot of playing time, but on the other hand, we get Isle of Wight Academy next week,&uot; Marks said. &uot;We’re going to have to wake up, because Isle of Wight is very tough and hopefully we can give them a good game.&uot;
The Raiders can most likely clinch a state playoff spot if they win their final two games against Isle of Wight and Blessed Sacrament Huguenot. The team is ranked fourth in the Virginia Independent Schools Division III rankings.
&uot;I think if we were to split the last two games, our chances are pretty good of making the playoffs,&uot; Marks said. &uot;Blessed Sacrament plays Roanoke Catholic next week, and we have them (BSH) the last week of the season. If we were to win out, we would definitely be in.&uot;
SA hosts Isle of Wight Friday at 7:30 p.m.
