Kathryn P. Saunders

IVOR—Kathryn Pittman Saunders, 81, died Oct. 14, 2007, at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk.

The youngest of 10 children, she was born in Ivor to the late Ernest W. Pittman and Mabel Gertrude Williams Pittman.

Mrs. Saunders was a retired vice president of the Bank of Sussex and Surry; was a member of

the WMU and choir at Ivor Baptist Church where she was a member; was a member of the Southampton County Planning Commission; and a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a true “southern lady” who lived life to the fullest.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alonza Walter “Rusty” Saunders Sr.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Saunders Wheawill and husband Dick of Richmond and Kay Saunders Joyner and husband Wesley of Courtland; a son, A. Walter Saunders Jr. and wife Lisa of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren, Courtney L. Wheawill, Matthew T. Wheawill, Susan J. Fowler and husband Travis, Stephen W. Joyner, Robert W. Joyner, Katie Saunders,

Samuel Saunders;

two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Ian Fowler; sisters, Margaret P. Eggleston and Gladys P. Beale; and sisters-in-law, Frances Stamatas and Laura S. James.

Funeral services will be held in the Purviance Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Wakefield, today at 3

p.m. with the Rev. Steve Gupton officiating.

Interment will follow in Ivor Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Kay and Wesley Joyner in Courtland.
