An vital gog in the wheels of downtown improvement is missing after David Merrick resigned the position of director of the Downtown Franklin Association.

Merrick was in the position for only one year, hardly enough time to accurately grade the performance.

But the city must look long and hard at its next candidate, hire wisely and for the long term.
