Harvey F. Saunders Sr.

CHUCKATUCK—Havey Frances Saunders Sr., 97, died Oct. 10, 2007, at Obici Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Saunders was born in Southampton County Nov. 12, 1909, to the late Maggie Sue and Robert Lee Saunders.
In his early years, he farmed in Southampton County before moving to Chuckatuck in 1933, where he worked for Lone Star Cement Company and retired as a quarry foreman in 1973.
He was the oldest active member of Oakland Christian Church where he served as deacon, superintendent of Sunday schools and was a member of the Men’s Bible Class.
He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was an Honorary and Charter member of the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department.
He was a member of the Chuckatuck Ruritan Club where he proudly served with 53 years of perfect attendance.
Mr. Saunders was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Carrie Blythe Saunders; his brothers, Willie, Johnnie and Robert Lee; and his sisters, Gracie Holland, Gertie Sue Strickland and Rebie Holland.
Survivors include his sons, Harvey Frances Saunders Jr. and wife Jackie of Smithfield and Jerry Saunders and wife Iola of Chuckatuck; his daughter, Peggy Saunders Garvey and husband William Garvey of Waynesboro; and his sister, Mary Nell Drew of Suffolk.
Mr. Saunders, known as “Pop” to all who knew him, was the loving and devoted grandfather of nine and great-grandfather of 16.
A celebration of “Pop’s” life was to
be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakland Christian Church in Chuckatuck.
