WAKEFIELD—Southampton Academy stormed to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 47-20 victory over rival Tidewater Academy in Virginia Commonwealth Conference action here Friday night.

Senior Will Hastings’ all-around performance paced the Raiders. He caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Lass in the first quarter and returned an interception 35 yards for another score in the third quarter.

But Hastings’ biggest play came as Tidewater Academy knocked on the door on the Warriors’ opening drive of the second half. Hastings, a 5-foot-9, 155-pounder, tackled TA’s Casey Gay on the 1-yard line, stripped the ball, caught the fumble in the air and ran it 99 yards for a touchdown.

&uot;We had a lot of good plays on defense,&uot; said Raider head coach Dale Marks. &uot;Our second string did a good job on both offense and defense. A win is a win, and we’re on a three-game winning streak, which is good.&uot;

Southampton Academy improved to 4-2 overall, 3-1 in the VCC. Tidewater slipped to 0-6 overall, 0-4 in conference play.

The Raiders’ Robert Marks had 10 rushes for 72 yards and a touchdown. Freshman John Hinkle added 46 yards and a touchdown. Andy Cook rushed for 33 yards and a score.

Quarterback Tyler Lass completed four passes, two of which were touchdowns. Paul Edwards snagged a 53-yard scoring reception in the second quarter.

Southampton built a 41-0 lead before Tidewater scored three late touchdowns to make the final score respectable.

Warrior quarterback Chris Grammer scored on runs of 54 yards and 1 yard. Grammer also hooked up with Rhyne Seward on a 50-yard scoring strike.

Grammer rushed for 167 yards in a sterling performance. Gay added 38 yards on the ground for TA.

SA, which beat Tidewater 49-0 a year ago in Courtland, returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday, hosting Carlisle School. Tidewater travels to Isle of Wight Academy for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
