Ann R. Smola

ALEXANDRIA—Ann Rooney Smola, 87, died Sept. 29, 2007.

She was the daughter of Guy and Emma Belle Rooney born Oct. 16, 1919, in Hampton, where she grew up.

Mrs. Smola resided in Newport News most of her adult life until she moved to the Washington area in 2001 to be near her oldest daughter, Suzanne. While living in the Tidewater area,

She was a graduate of Hampton High School, Mary Washington College and the College of William and Mary. She was a member of P.E.O., the Huguenot Society of Virginia, U.S. Daughters of the War of 1812, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, the Dames of the Court of Honor and served twice as regent of the Comte De Grasse chapter, NSDAR.

She was also a member of First Baptist Church in Newport News where she enjoyed singing with the Swinging Singers.

She was predeceased by her husband, Emery Emil Smola.

Survivors include her daughters, Suzanne Reynolds (Donald) of Alexandria, Mary Cooper-Connell (Dan) of Smithfield and Emily Hausler (Tom) of Dripping Springs, Texas;

five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will take place at Peninsula Funeral Home Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Newport News. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park Cemetery.
