Franklin remains undefeated

WEST POINT – Elliott Bottoms rushed for 198 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead Franklin to a 35-23 win over previously unbeaten West Point in a non-district game Friday night.

With the score tied at 14-14 at the half, West Point took a 17-14 lead on a field goal with 6:40 to play in the quarter. Franklin (5-0) regained the lead for good at 21-17 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Donzell Shearin and an extra-point kick by James Jervey with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

Bottoms took over in the fourth quarter. He scored on a 17-yard run with 8:26 to play and later added a 36-yard touchdown run with 2:09 to play.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first half. The Pointers (4-1) got on the board first when Terron Parker ran it in from seven yards out to take a 6-0 lead with 2:54 to play in the first quarter.

Franklin’s Shearin scored on a 14-yard run with 9:54 to play in the first half, and Jervey put Franklin up 7-6 with the extra point kick.

Parker again gave West Point the lead with a 38-yard run with 7:32 to play in the half. Parker also ran in the 2-point conversion to put the Pointers up 14-7.

Franklin tied the game with 5:05 to play when Shearin hit Isaiah Hudson with a 49-yard touchdown pass and Jervey booted the extra point.

&uot;They have a tough little team,&uot; said Darren Parker, Franklin head coach. &uot;They’ve got some big backs and we had to play. The second half we started executing and went into a bit of no huddle. The ground game just took over then.&uot;

On defense, Antonio Smith made 11 solo and assisted tackles for Franklin.
