NEWPORT NEWS-Southampton Academy jumped out to a 27-0 lead and hung on to beat Hampton Roads Academy 35-24 in a non-conference football game Friday night.
The Raiders (2-2) have had a history this season of jumping out to big leads and then losing them.
“I wish I could tell you (why that happens),&uot; said Coach Dale Marks. &uot;That has been our modus operandi all year. We lead at Broadwater and ended up getting beat. Part of it is attrition. Two of our two-way starters – Paul Edwards and Andy Cook – are out. Every team that we have faced is bigger than we are, and it kind of wears you down in the fourth quarter.&uot;
The Raiders opened the scoring at 8:40 on a 14-yard run by William Dole.
Tyler Lass kicked the extra point to put SA up 7-0.
Robert Marks scored on a 50-yard interception return at the 6:20 mark of the first quarter. The kick failed and the score stayed at 13-0.
At 9:14 of the second quarter, Lass hit Will Hastings with a 17-yard touchdown pass for a 19-0 lead.
Dole scored his second touchdown with 4:50 left in the second quarter on a two-yard run. Marks ran in the two-point conversion and SA led 27-0.
The Raiders scored a fourth-quarter touchdown at the 7:10 mark when Dole ran seven yards. Lass passed to Marks for the 35-24 lead.
Marks was happy with his team’s effort.
&uot;It’s another game that our kids just went out and scrapped and played hard,&uot; he said. &uot;The effort has not been lacking all year. Tonight was one of our best first halves all year.&uot;
Southampton Academy plays at Brunswick Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
