CHESAPEAKE—Virginia Carolyn McCarter, 75, of Prindle Court, died Sept. 22, 2007, in Obici Hospital, Suffolk, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. McCarter was born in Creedmoor, N.C., the daughter of the late Arthur A. Bowles and Jeanne Chappell Bowles. She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, Portsmouth.
She was a former member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Edenton, N.C., where she was a Sunday school teacher and a charter member of St. Anne’s Women’s Club.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, William D. “Bill” McCarter; a daughter, Gwendolyn McCarter Carter and husband Marty of Zuni; two sons, David McCarter Jr. and wife Debbie of Chesapeake and Martin McCarter of Suffolk; 10 grandchildren, Martin and wife Marcia, Branden, Kyle, Chase, Hunter, Lindsay and husband Stephen, April and husband Don, Shannon, Heather and Morgan; four great-grandsons; three sisters, Audrey Cooke of Richmond, Jean O’Neal and Judy Yow, both of Durham, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Alma Holloway of Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Riley D. McCarter and William David McCarter III; a sister, Jackie Wilson and a daughter-in-law, Anita McCarter.
A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated Monday in Holy Angels Catholic Church, 34 Afton Parkway, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Michael G. Boehling.
Burial was held Tuesday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Angels Catholic Church or to the American Heart Association.
Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, handled arrangements.
