Wreck claims 6-year-old; mother charged

FRANKLIN—A Meherrin Elementary School student is dead, and his mother faces several criminal charges, following a vehicle crash on Darden Scout Road early Saturday morning.
Six-year-old Dustin Jacob Whitehurst was killed when the sport utility vehicle his mother was driving ran of the road about three-quarters of a mile north of Governor Darden Road and flipped several times before landing on its top in a field, according to police reports.
The boy, who police said was not secured in his seat, was ejected from the vehicle.
&uot;Dusty,&uot; a first-grader at Meherrin Elementary, was a member of Courtland Baptist Church and played on the Courtland Red Coach-Pitch baseball team.
His mother, Rebecca Whitehurst, 35, of Governor Darden Road in Courtland, was treated for injuries at Southampton Memorial Hospital.
She was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, failing to secure a minor with a child restraint and failure to wear a seat belt, police said.
