FRANKLIN—Past mayors will be honored Monday evening prior to the regular City Council meeting.
An unveiling of the new mayor portrait wall will take place at 6:30 p.m., an idea that originated from staff members after visiting other city halls, according to City Manager Bucky Taylor.
&uot;We’ve seen different places that have photos of their mayors displayed,&uot; he said. &uot;We felt like this would be a good way to recognize the people that have given so much of their time and energy to council.&uot;
The approximately 18-inch-by-20-inch black and white photographs. They are framed with engraved brass plates that have the mayor’s name and dates he served the city since it was incorporated in its current form in 1961.
The eight portraits will hang on the back wall of the City Council Chambers, and include Dr. Darden W. Jones, who served from the end of December 1961 to June 30, 1974; Dr. John A. Murray Jr., serving from 1974 to 1976; Dr. A.B. Harrison, 1976 to 1980; Robert B. Allport Jr., 1980 to 1984; G. Elliott Cobb Jr., 1984 to 1988, and again from March 18, 1993 to June 1994; M. Rice Day Jr., 1988 to 1991; C. Franklin Jester Jr., 1994 to 1996; and Jim Councill, 1996 to present.
&uot;We’ve invited family members (of the past mayors) to attend for a brief unveiling and a small reception,&uot; said Taylor.
